queerbeat is a digital newsroom that reports authentic queer voices in India. With community at its core, queerbeat collaborates with queer artists, writers and researchers from all walks of life, and produces thought-provoking features that explore issues, achievements and untold stories within the LGBTQIA+ community in India. queerbeat is a platform for dialogue, understanding and solidarity.
I worked with award-winning journalist Ankur Paliwal to create a visual identity and a fully responsive website that champions the diversity and inclusivity inherent to queer culture.
Project Goals
The mission was clear: to celebrate diversity, foster inclusivity, and amplify the experiences and struggles of the queer community through exceptional storytelling.
queerbeat is building a community for queer voices to be heard loud and clear, with thought-provoking features that explore issues, achievements, and untold stories within the LGBTQIA+ community. We had to create a vibrant digital platform that serves as a beacon for LGBTQIA+ voices. queerbeat's brand is a testament to the power of design in amplifying voices and fostering a sense of belonging within the queer narrative.

Identity System
Inspired by queer typography and bolstered by art, we crafted a brand identity to authentically serve queer voices and elevate diverse identities. We began the process with a deep dive into "queer typography" and how type aligns with queer culture, resisting conventions and norms, to transcend its traditional role and become a vehicle of queer expression and identity.
At the heart of queerbeat's visual identity lies a dynamic typographic system. Inspired by the eclectic mix-match of fonts seen in popular queer media, this system encapsulates the fluidity and diversity of queer expression. The color palette extends beyond traditional pride colors, embracing an expansive spectrum and gradients as an extension of the multifaceted nature of queer experiences, while the gradients add depth and dynamism to the platform's artworks. The brand uses these artworks not only as a form of expression but also as a tool for advocacy, raising awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues. Together, these elements form a brand identity that not only reflects but celebrates the diverse tapestry of queerness.

queerbeat's website embodies a seamless fusion of elegant minimalism and vibrant queer expression. Dynamic typography, not bound by convention, and an expanded color palette, awash with gradients, adds a layer of depth and vivacity to the platform's visual storytelling. These hues symbolize the kaleidoscope of queer experiences, reinforcing the site's commitment to inclusivity. The integration of original artwork was a key highlight, enriching the storytelling experience. Rigorous testing and user feedback refined the site, resulting in a powerful digital newsroom that amplifies queer voices. In sum, QueerBeat's website is a digital masterpiece, a realm where elegant design harmonizes with dynamic queer expression, encapsulating the essence of the LGBTQIA+ community for all to embrace and celebrate.
